The lab is heading to Cornell!

Mudd Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York

Starting this summer, and after 11 wonderful years in Munich, the Portugues Lab will be starting a new adventure at the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior (NBB) at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.
We leave lifelong friends and collaborators behind, but this sadness is mixed with the excitement of colleagues, friends and research ahead.

The department was established in 1964 as one of the birthplaces of Neuroethology, and its research focuses on (1) The neural basis of behavior and (2) The evolution of behavior. It currently consists of 17 professors and 13 emeritus faculty.

Nearby departments include: Applied and Engineering Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Physics and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The possibilities for learning and collaboration are endless.

We are looking for a lab technician, a lab manager and researchers to join us in this new chapter. The ad is below.

The Portugues Lab (www.portugueslab.com, Google Scholar Link) is looking for two people to join us in our transition from the Technical University of Munich to the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University. The positions available correspond nominally to Technician II (Lab Tech) and Technician V (Lab Manager), but flexibility is possible.

The laboratory performs in-vivo work with larval zebrafish and mice in the context of systems neuroscience, though previous experience in this field is not required. The tools we use are: microscope building and functional imaging (lightsheet, two-photon, and confocal), electrophysiology, optogenetics, cloning, immuno-histochemistry, histology, modeling and large-scale data analysis.
We are looking for people who want to learn, are dedicated and reliable, work well in a team environment and would be willing to spend a couple of months in Munich, Germany, before moving to Ithaca, New York.

We offer a caring and fun environment in a laboratory that performs cutting-edge science and a top academic and research institution. The position is ideal if you want to gain experience and continue to further develop your skills in order to subsequently apply for more advanced positions, such as graduate school or postdoctoral research. Longer-term possibilities can be discussed.

If you are interested, email:
– your CV,
– a list of referees
– a short letter of introduction describing your interests and what you are looking for in this position
to: “ruben.portugues at tum.de”.
